Mozambique Tilapia Fingerlings – Resilient Fish for Dams, Ponds, and Brackish Water

At Zeekoevalley Farms, we breed and supply Mozambique Tilapia, one of the hardiest and most well-known tilapia species in South Africa. Often the first species people think of when they hear “tilapia/kurper,” Mozambique Tilapia are trusted for their resilience, tolerance to poor water conditions, and overall adaptability. These fingerlings are an excellent option for farmers, dam owners, and aquaculture beginners looking for a low-maintenance, proven performer.

Built for Tough Conditions

Mozambique Tilapia thrive in environments where other fish would struggle. They’re known for their high tolerance to salinity, low oxygen levels, and fluctuating water quality. This makes them ideal for:

  • Farm dams with poor water turnover
  • Brackish or slightly salty water systems
  • Seasonal ponds or rural tanks with minimal filtration

If you’re working with water that’s less than ideal, Mozambique Tilapia are your best bet.

Omnivorous Feeders with a Flexible Diet

Unlike Redbreast Tilapia, which are primarily herbivores, Mozambique Tilapia are omnivorous. They’ll feed on:

  • Algae and aquatic plants
  • Insects and small invertebrates
  • Floating pellets and kitchen scraps

This makes them suitable for systems where diverse or mixed food sources are available — or where low-input aquaculture is the goal.

Moderate Growth, Strong Survivors

Mozambique Tilapia tend to grow slower than Nile or Redbreast Tilapia, but they compensate with resilience and low mortality. They’re especially useful in systems that rely on natural food chains or where constant feeding is not practical.

Size at maturity:

  • Up to 30–35 cm
  • Weight: 700g to 1.2 kg, depending on water temperature and feeding

Edible and Farm-Friendly

Mozambique Tilapia produce firm, white meat with a mild flavor. While not commonly used for high-end fillets, they are excellent for:

  • Home cooking
  • Braais and fish stews
  • Local food security initiatives

Their adaptability and simplicity make them a favorite for community ponds, schools, and rural co-ops.
